Octopuses have been found to ‘imprint’ octagonal images on the muddy seabed to avoid the threat of predators and to conserve energy by exploiting the passive movement of ocean currents. This is an example of how deep-sea fauna embodies convergent evolution by, among other things, facilitating the vertical transport of carbon in the water column.
